“What was my first impression of Leroy Jordan? Well, I was in the cafeteria my freshman year at Alabama. It was my first meal with the team and I was a little nervous. Suddenly I heard this awful grinding and cracking noise coming from the table across from me. When I looked over where the noise was coming from there was this angry looking bear of a man chewing and staring me right in the eyes. I looked away and said nothing of it until he left the cafeteria. I asked the guys who it was and what was the noise I heard? A teammate, Ray Ogden, said ‘that was Leroy Jordan’. Ray reached over and grabbed Leroy’s plate and put it on the table for me to see. He had been eating fried chicken legs and there was nothing left but twelve knuckles from the ends of the bones. Leroy was eating the bones along with the meat. What kind of a man eats bones? One of the guys said, ‘that’s nothing…you should hear him when we have T-bone steaks.’ Needless to say I always gave Mr. Jordan the utmost respect.
