Most high school recruits select a college for reasons such as playing time, school prestige or bonds with a coaching staff. Andalusia linebacker Nico Johnson chose Alabama because it was near his mother. "She's a diabetic. That's why I chose Alabama," Johnson said. "I chose Alabama because they were close. It was in my heart."

Crowded backfield forces runners to think team-first
Grant, the most productive UA back in 2007, spent much of the second half watching from the bench. Alone. The sophomore from Lumberton, Miss., did run four times for minus-3 yards late, only to return to his spot apart from his celebrating team. In the aftermath, he received a message from Saban. Smith's start against Tulane 'doubtful'
The status of starting defensive tackle Andre Smith for Saturday’s game against Tulane is still undetermined. Smith was downgraded from questionable to doubtful, head coach Nick Saban said Wednesday, making it less likely that he sees the field in the home opener. Smith sprained his knee during the third quarter of the Clemson game Aug. 30 and has been unable to practice all this week. His streak of 27 consecutive starts for the Crimson Tide is in jeopardy.
