Tide Tidbits - 12/30/2007

Tide Wins 30-24
It was not pretty, but it was a win and keeps the Tide firmly in the lead as the nation's winningest bowler. A winning season of 7-6 is a lot better than a second consecutive losing season with a 6-7 record. Let's build for the future. RTR (Recruit Tide Recruit!)

Star Jackson Article
The hype surrounding Lake Worth senior quarterback Star Jackson became so intense so quickly that most coaches admit they were hesitant to believe what they were hearing. If he doesn't impress with his pinpoint passing, he'll get you with his timing, decision making or his ability to predict the behavior of an opposing secondary unit. Not to mention his knack for shedding oncoming defensive linemen while never taking his eyes off his receivers."He's elusive in the pocket, he stands tall and has a rocket for an arm," Dwyer coach Jack Daniels said. "He's the real deal."
-- Thanks BW for the link

Jones just keeps getting better
After an incredible junior year in 2006, it was easy to assume blue-chip receiver Julio Jones' stats might dip in 2007. "(It's amazing) what he's done the last three or four years, and the numbers he's put up, the things he's done for our team on and off the field, from a leadership standpoint," said Foley coach Todd Watson. "I've been fortunate enough to be around a lot of good players, and he's the best I've ever been around. I know there's a lot of other good players out there around the state, but he's something special."

Saban proves he’s back where he belongs
The Crimson Tide — to a man — seem ready to jump off a building for this guy. The win-loss record didn't change from a year ago, but it appears attitudes, outlooks on life and potential for future success did. "He's definitely a guy high on character," Alabama defensive end Wallace Gilberry said. "He brings a different twist to the game of football. He talks about things you would not even really think about. He's taught me a lot and bettered me on the field and off the field. I got more out of it than anyone else." "I only need one word to describe coach," Alabama's senior wide receiver D.J. Hall said. "Winner. It's hard to be lackadaisical around him. He's going to make sure you give everything you've got. I see incredible things for this program if coach Saban is here."

Would You Sell a "Real" National Championship Ring?
If you were a coach and had a "real" national championship ring, would you sell it? Think of the recruiting advantages a coach has with a "real" national championship ring, even if it is from another school. Wonder what this Auburn staff member is thinking? Note the use of "Auburn", "national championship" and "EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND ! ! ! " in the same sentence. :)

Word has it that Caldwell has been advised by the NFL to sit tight and make the BIG money next year. I'm sure Saban is welcoming him with open arms. People, this is big!

Tide has one of best recruiting classes, so far
The University of Alabama football coaching staff has put together a great recruiting class and will have an opportunity to finish with the top class in the country (or very near) on National Signing Day in February.

Orange Bleeding Continues...
The Florida prospect was told by the coaches they would be leaving the Vols staff after the Outback Bowl.

Posted on TideSports.com Forum
I live in Shreveport and have been visiting with the team and coaches. Today they had a good two hour workout in cold rainy conditions. The teams met at Buffalo Wild Wings for a Welcoming party. Visited with Coach Saban, wife, Mal Moore, and a couple of assistant coaches. All were in great spirits and feel like they are having a productive week. If you want to get to know someone on the staff, I recommend Cedric Burns. He is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and is CNS's righthand man. Met with all the players tonight while helping out in the players hospitality room. This is where they go to get away from everyone, and play video games, eat, use computers, etc. After talking with the players, you find out that we have quality individuals playing for Alabama. With few exceptions they all are polite, well-mannered, and extremely friendly. Heard from one of the players that JJ has been working second unit defensive side and should get quality playing time.

Saban thanks players for recruiting help
On multiple occasions in recent weeks, Saban has made it a point to commend the job current players have done in hosting prospects on campus."Those recruiting weekends are big," quarterback John Parker Wilson said. "Besides games, it's as big as it gets around here. It's a very big deal and it's taken very seriously."Indeed, safety Rashad Johnson had plans to go home to Sulligent the weekend after the regular season ended. But Saban said he needed him around to welcome visiting recruits. So Johnson called his mother and broke the bad news.

Bama Quote #263

"Alabama football is great because of the people who play every year. It's not just the five years I'm here. It's going to be the 50 years after I'm here. Alabama football will live on far past my career here. That's the most important thing. The better players we get in here, the more the legacy will live on. This place is special because of its tradition. We want it to keep it that way."

Tide Tidbits - 12/23/2007

Recruiting Rankings are Updated
Both Rivals and Scout updated their rankings last week and the Tide moved in both rankings.

Former Tiders team up on reality TV show
Former Alabama offensive linemen Trent Patterson and Roger Shultz will appear together on NBC's new season of its weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser." Patterson, a guard, and Shultz, a center, played together at Alabama from 1987-90. Shultz will start the show weighing around 360 pounds with a goal to dip below 200 pounds. Patterson, meanwhile, opens near a hefty 430 pounds. He lists his New Year's resolution as, "To fit in my college uniform!"

Police: Sabans not injured in car accident
Saban and his wife Terry were driving near the entrance of their neighborhood, the Crown Pointe subdivision of Tuscaloosa, when their car struck a tree that was down across the road, Kosloff told The News. The accident took place around 9:30 p.m (Saturday). No one was injured in the one-car wreck.

BIG SCHOOLS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
"He's the wisest and smartest guy I've ever met. I'm behind him 100 percent," Jackson said. "I know other people see him in a different way. He's a hard-nosed coach. He demands discipline, but I believe what he says. That's what sold me on him. I'm not going anywhere else other than Alabama." -- Star Jackson on Nick Saban

CECIL HURT: Biggest story of the Year? That's easy
But the No. 1 story — which started on Jan. 1, 2007, when there was still a coaching search going on, and will stretch right up until the late hours of Dec. 30 — is obvious. In fact, Nick Saban’s first year at Alabama has dominated the headlines to a degree that it would be possible to break it down into segments and make a Top 10 list that was all Saban, all the time.“Saban Hired At Alabama.” “Saban Packs Them In At A-Day.” “Saban Begins First Season.” “Saban-Led Tide Pounds Tennessee.” “Saban Can’t Stop Tide’s November Swoon.” “Saban Angers (Insert Your Interest-Group’s Name Here) With Remarks.”

A sign outside a newly opened old fashioned ice cream soda fountain reads “Come See and Talk to our Robot Soda Jerk.” This intrigues a passing man who enters the establishment and orders a coke float. The robot serves him a perfectly prepared float, and then asks him, "What's your IQ?

The man replies "150" and the robot proceeds to make conversation about global warming factors, quantum physics and spirituality, biomimicry, environmental interconnectedness, string theory and nanotechnology.

The customer is very impressed and thinks, "This is really cool." He decides to test the robot. He walks out, turns around, and comes back in for another visit. Again, the robot serves him the perfectly prepared soda and asks him, "What's your IQ?" The man responds, "about a 100." Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about fishing, NASCAR, baseball, hunting, favorite fast foods and guns.

Really impressed, the man leaves and decides to give the robot one more test. He heads out and returns, the robot serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?" The man replies, "Er, 50, I thank." And the robot says... real slow, "So....is... AUBURN... gonna.. have... a... good... team... this... year????"

Alonzo Lawrence Update

Alonzo Lawrence from Mississippi is quickly becoming one of the south's hottest recruits. During the AL-MS All-Star game he held his ground covering two blue-chip receivers, Julio Jones and Deandre Brown. Rivals rewarded his performance by awarding him a 4th Star.

Lawrence was quoted as saying "Alabama is my school. They're the school that stands out right now. They've recruited me pretty hard for a while." Recently, Miami and Tennessee have offered him. Rumor is he may commit to Alabama if his January 11th visit goes well.

Scout's recruiting analyst Andrew Bone said, "Watched him in Mobile Monday night, a very excited player after the game in our video interview. Great talent."

Recruiting Parade of Stars Continues

As posted here on Sunday's Tide Tidbits, it was rumored Chris Jackson a 4* WR and soft-verbal to GA Tech was giving Alabama strong consideration. Today he stopped considering and committed to the Tide.

An article on TideSports.com quotes him as saying, "It was a hard, real hard decision. A lot of things led me to my decision. Alabama has great tradition and a great offense. The coaching change at Georgia Tech played a big part as well. Coach Saban told me he was proud to have me. He said he couldn't wait to get me there."

Best of all, Jackson will enroll in January, be available for spring practice and count as a part of the class of 2007.

I will update the recruiting page when the new rankings come out.

Tide Tidbits 12/16/2007

Here are a few items I came across over the weekend that I thought were interesting:

Cody a Fan in a Major Way
Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins (son of Col. coach Dan Hawkins) has two come-from-behind wins to his credit over a member of the Alabama coaching staff. As father and son stood in the lobby of the Texas football offices waiting to meet with Mack Brown, Applewhite strolled by. Cody said he tugged on his dad’s sweatshirt saying, “That’s Major Applewhite. That’s Major Applewhite.” They went to lunch, where Applewhite and Cody played two games of Eight-ball on the pool table. Applewhite led throughout but Hawkins won when his idol scratched on the eight ball to end both games.

Nick Saban Returns
Nick Saban arrived in town 12 days before Saint Nick to visit Lake Worth senior quarterback Star Jackson. Jackson is genuinely sold on Saban as a coach and praises him as a person. Interestingly, Lake Worth coach Errick Lowe played at Auburn, the Tide’s big in-state rival. Wonder how he will feel if Jackson throws a touchdown pass (or passes) to beat Auburn over the next four years?!

Melvin Ray Quote
"I made the Alabama commitment for a reason because they have stuck with me and believed in me for two years," said Ray, who held an Alabama offer dating back to Mike Shula's tenure at the Capstone. "I hear something from someone at Alabama all the time. They have shown me more love than anyone else, and my commitment to Alabama is solid. At the same time, I am not going to be stubborn and not listen to what other schools have to say. It would take something big for me to change my mind on Alabama. I am 90 to 95-percent certain I will be in Tuscaloosa next fall. I tell everyone the same thing, including FSU, LSU or whoever. I am committed to Alabama." - from BamaMag open forum

Coach Saban in Office When Melvin Ray's Coach is Fired
File this one under strange. Coach Weldon was sitting in his office Wednesday with Alabama Coach Nick Saban, who was checking on Melvin Ray. Weldon was called to the administrative office. He returned a few minutes later and told Saban he'd been fired. - The above was pieced together from from two articles. Here is the second one: Weldon: I will always love NFC

Chris Jackson Rumor
Chris Jackson is a 4* WR and soft-verbal to GA Tech. After a recent in-home visit from Coach Saban, it appears we have an excellent shot at him. He and his parents were really impressed by Coach Saban and the opportunity to play early. Jackson will be able to enroll in January which would give him a head start on the current WRs we have committed. Paul Johnson later came to talk with him and told him about the option offense he runs, but said he would show him how they would get him the ball. He is going to visit GT this week because he says he owes it to them. He will decide shortly after this weekend. He wasn't happy with what Johnson said about the GT offense. Looks good for Bama. - from BamaMag open forum

About BamaFootball4Life

Some have wondered, "What is BamaFootball4Life?" The short answer is BamaFootball4Life is a blog I created on November 22, 2007 while off a few days for the Thanksgiving Holiday. The long answer is a little bit more detailed.

We went to my sister-in-law's for Thanksgiving lunch (hey JN! - she's a BIG Bama fan) and upon returning I was cruising the web looking for Bama news. I got frustrated having to go to so many sites. I thought it would be nice if the news came to me, instead of me going to it. Well, after an hour or so of reading about RSS feeds and Blogger, I started setting up what I called my "Bama portal". It was just a shell web site with a lot of Bama news feeds. It was functional, but kind of bland looking.

To dress the site up, I decided to add a picture and give it a title. A couple of years ago we took the digital camera to homecoming and took a lot of pictures. The shape of title banner did not really fit well with the pictures. So I focused in on the end-zone of one of the pictures and added the title and graphics.

All Bama fans are members of one or more informal networks. When you see a good article or joke you forward it to those four or five people in your network. I was a member of a couple of these networks. For many years I have collected Bama quotes and jokes. It was my goal in 2007 to sort and organize them. It soon became apparent that the only way it would get done was if I set a goal of doing one a day. To force myself to stick with that goal, I emailed the "quote of the day" to my informal network. That's why the first quote posted on the blog was #242 - I will eventually cycle back through to numbers 1-241.

While researching the RSS feeds, I saw where FeedBurner would manage and deliver the blog's content for free. I opened up the blog to the world, added a sign-up box on the site and started posting the quotes on the blog. This allows people to freely sign up or opt out at their discretion.

I think it would be helpful if I addressed a few questions that have come up.
  • Q1: Is the blog open to anyone?
  • A1: Yes, to anyone that loves Bama Football.
  • Q2: I saw where you can subscribe to the content. How much does it cost?
  • A2: Nothing, it is absolutely free to the reader. Blogger and FeedBurner (both are owned by Google) are providing the platform for all this to happen. They make their money on the ads displayed on the sight (Full disclosure: Supposedly I get a small cut, but I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon:)
  • Q3: If I enter my email address will I start getting Spam?
  • A3: Not from me or FeedBurner.
  • Q4: Are the jokes posted going to be clean? Is it safe for my kids to read?
  • A4: Yes. I am a Christian and adhere to Christian values. I have two kids (12 and 10) that read the site.
  • Q5: Is this going to turn into one of those subscription only sites like Rivals and Scout?
  • A5: I don't have the time, resources, contacts or desire to manage anything like that. I am just an average guy that loves following Bama football.
  • Q6: Will this be another site filled with rival fans talking smack?
  • Q6: No. If you or I want to see that, there are plenty of other sites that cater to that environment. This is a Bama site for Bama fans.
  • Q7: If I see something interesting, can I send it to you?
  • A8: Yes, please email it to BamaFootball4Life@gmail.com (email address is also on the bottom of each web page). If I think it is something that the wider group would be interested in, I will post it on the blog. Yesterday two people emailed me the article Auburn losing recruiting war with in-state rival that I posted on the blog. Quite frankly, I would not have seen it if it had not been emailed to me.
I am sure I have missed some questions that have have come up. If I missed yours, send me an email and I will address it.

Sorry for being so long winded. One day I may wonder why I ever set this thing up. At least it is documented now. :)

At a recent SEC meeting, coaches Phil Fulmer and Nick Saban are walking down the beach talking about the rivalry between Tennessee and Alabama. As they are walking, Coach Saban trips over something in the sand. Upon closer inspection it turns out to be a genie’s lamp.

“Who disturbs me?” asked the genie. The coaches both say they did. “You will each get one wish,” said the genie.

Coach Fulmer offers to go first. “I want an impenetrable wall built around the entire state of Tennessee so that none of those stupid Alabamians can ever get in. I want it as far down into the ground as it is high and I want it to be completely sealed in so that we can finally have our peace!” The genie grants the wish to Coach Fulmer and his is instantly whisked away to his new paradise. The genie now tells Coach Saban he’ll grant him one wish. Coach Saban says, “Fill it with water.”

Problem on the Plain?

NJ forwarded me a recent article in The Alexander City Outlook by Bruce Meyers. In this article he wrote the following:
  • The 2007 version of the Auburn Tigers had issues on offense

  • It was apparent from the get-go that Brandon Cox did not fit the Borges scheme. Sounds like a recruiting issue, what say you?

  • I will tell you exactly why Auburn lost four games in 2007, and why they will slip into college football mediocrity in 2008. The head coach has lost his desire to recruit when all of the other coaches are out there working

  • Auburn recruiting update: Fifteen commitments, none are rated in the top 150 in the country, four are not rated, and none are ranked in the top 35 at their respective positions.

  • Alabama recruiting update: Currently No. 3 in both recruiting polls with 25 commitments, three top-100 recruits. [ ... ] Alabama will be the top recruiting class in the country - they will land top prospect, No. 1 wide receiver Julio Jones. The Tide will ink no less than 10 more top 150 recruits, all in the top 15 at their respective positions.

  • Final note: I am not an Alabama fan.

Bama Gets a BIG Recruit

This week Alabama Nick Saban received a commitment from Terrance Cody, a four-star 6-foot-5, 385-pound (Rivals lists him at 395-pounds) defensive tackle from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Miss.

Cody had offers from Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee and Ole Miss. He will graduate in May and will take an official visit to Alabama on Dec. 7th.

This brings Alabama to 23 commitments. I have updated the Recruiting page with Alabama's new rankings.

From The Bama Page:

A member of our staff talked to a member of the 61 team recently. This former player had recently talked to Coach Saban. In that conversation this former player asked Coach Saban if LSU had called him…Coach Saban said that Sexton told him that LSU wanted to talk to him about their soon to be job opening and Coach Saban said I have a job.

Coach told the former BAMA player that he is at his dream job now and will retire at Bama unless we fire him. Coach Saban went on to say that Bama has the most amazing fanbase he has ever seen and never imagined it would have been like this.

He said he is excited about the future and the recruiting class.
